tom_lefroy: (dark thoughts)
If, indeed, he could concentrate on writing a decent letter of address to his family in Limerick, he would have finished writing it long ago.

As it so happens, Tom Lefroy is very much distracted. Paired with his uncle's short temper is his own increasing agitation for the current situation - he is unsure how much longer he can remain here, living in such a wasteful way. If he could...change the system of law as he knows it, and change his uncle's firmly traditional (and narrow-minded, perhaps) ways, could he attain some semblance of happiness? Some sense of freedom that he's never known?

He does not blame his family in the least. He applauds his parents for their decision to marry each other for love - it is the very thing that makes him proud to be their son, that they gave themselves to each other with affection, rebelling against what society demanded of them. Money was no factor in their marriage.

...And yet, because of it, there are dangerous consequences. Punishments, perhaps, that are unjustly put upon them because they listened with their hearts instead of their minds. What fairness is there? What does it say of life, when on the one hand, people are encouraged to follow their hearts and live contently in whatever way possible, and are then doomed to arranged marriages based on financial stability on the other?

Running a hand through his already dishevelled hair, he lets out a sigh and finds his way to the window. A smug sort of smile tugs at his lips as he sights a prostitute issuing herself for business - and right before his uncle's house, too. Almost laughable, really. If the Honorable Judge himself could witness this right now...

...He'd likely have her and her potential client arrested and tried in court, of course.

Stepping away from the window, Tom glances at the piece of paper left on his desk, a severely unfinished piece with naught but a couple of terribly scribbled lines explaining how he is faring here in London, how kindly the Judge is to accomodate him, and the start of his own studies in law.

"Aye, this'll never do," he says, picking it up and crumpling it within his hand.
