Thomas Langlois Lefroy is first and foremost, a city-dweller during the reign of King George III (1760-1801). He originally hails from Limerick (born there) and has 'aspirations' of becoming a lawyer for whatever reasons. Because of his family situation (his parents married for love), in order to support them and his many siblings, he seeks help from, and depends on, his uncle (Judge Langlois) for money. He comes from a good family in name and in character, but their financial situation leaves them all something to be desired.

At twenty years old (1796), he is both well-mannered and proper, but with a very clear rebellious streak, a thirst for the wildside and a slightly romantic undertone. He wants to believe the best of things, the optimistic in all of life, but is cynical, realistic and judgmental at the same time. While he wants to be a lawyer, he also sees the law system as corrupt, or lacking in the justice that it should bring to people. In order to overcome these requirements of propriety, he spends his free time in the company of women, his close friends for drinking, and recreational boxing; he is something of a playboy and has quite the reputation.

In regards to his relationship with Jane Austen, in around 1796, the two of them exchanged correspondence when he came to stay with his aunt and uncle Lefroy in the country. It is possible that he was the inspiration (or at least part of the inspiration) for the character of Mr Darcy in Austen's Pride and Prejudice. At the beginning, Jane and Tom do not get along, but their constant witty banter and interactions slowly transform into attraction until one night their feelings are shown to be mutual. Tom takes Jane to London afterward in an attempt to convince his uncle to give them his blessing for marriage. Unfortunately, upon receiving a slanderous letter concerning Jane's upbringing and reputation, the Judge forbids it. Faced with the need to support his family, Tom finds he cannot marry her, leaving both of them with broken hearts.

Only a short period later, he is betrothed to someone (from near his homeland, in County Wexford) and is clearly unhappy with the decision (despite the wealth he will inherit). One day, Tom and Jane meet once more in the wood and he explains that he's decided to go with his feelings over duty (much as his parents had) and asks Jane to run away with him, forming an elopement. It is only when Jane discovers documents of Tom's, indicating his dependence on his uncle, that she must give him up. He is determined not to lose Jane again - he'd lost her once. But Jane chooses duty over love, telling him (despite his refusals) that their love will only destroy them in time.

Disclaimer: Tom Lefroy is from Becoming Jane, and is the property of Miramax Films. He appears here solely for the purpose of role-playing in [info]milliways_bar, from which no profit whatsoever is being made.

Also, please be aware that this Tom Lefroy only resembles the real Thomas Lefroy in the vaguest ways. Therefore, any historical detail will likely be twisted and used in order to fit a more fictional account of the character. I do not intend to retell a historically accurate chronicle of his life; instead, I fully intend to take advantage of the more 'romantic' depiction of his life and feelings for Ms Austen more akin to the film.

I know the real Tom Lefroy and Jane Austen will likely be rolling in their graves, but ... I'm just in it for the fun. :D
